What is Conservation Grazing
Conservation grazing is the use of livestock where the primary objective is to manage the site for wildlife, whether it be grassland, woodland, wetland or scrub. Conservation grazing creates vegetation at different heights and small areas of bare ground. This makes it suitable for a wide range of wildlife in different habitats. It allows wildflowers to grow, flower and set seed each year. Conservation grazing often needs small numbers of livestock and sometimes requires specialist breeds.
Our Herds

Shetlands
Our herd are pedigree Shetland cattle which are a native and a rare breed. This type of cow was selectively bred on the Shetland Isles, to give them a very hardy nature and an ability to cope in harsh conditions with poor grazing. The breed is recognised by the Rare Breed Survival Trust as being ‘at risk’, so our breeding herd is very important for their preservation. They are a small breed with a good temperament and so are good to graze sites that are used by the public and dog walkers.
I would like to include a special thank you to the Henry Plumb Foundation who’s generosity assisted with the purchasing of the herd.

English Longhorns
Our pedigree Longhorn cattle are very distinctive, as their name suggests, due to their long horns and their wide range of brindle colours. They are a very gentle breed of cattle, and enjoy a diverse diet, so are ideal for conservation grazing. Bred for their hardiness, they often prefer to eat the dominant plant species, this leaves space for a variety of other species to become established, leading to a wider diversity of plants. The horns on the longhorn cattle will also help to control tough understory plants such as brambles and bracken. Our Herd of Longhorns are also no fence trained meaning we can control herd on pasture, anytime from anywhere. Provide access to fresh pastures, and save both time and money by not having to build and maintain fences

Commercial Suckler Herd
Our suckler herd is very close to our hearts as this is where the business was founded when we purchased our first cattle. We currently have a small Aberdeen Angus suckler herd of which we calve in the spring. We also use the herd for grazing some conservation sites as well as other land parcels around the county.
